Day 5
Charlottetown, PE to Dartmouth, NS
We started out in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and once I was sufficiently caffeinated, it was time to make a decision: either go West on PEI and take the ferry to Nova Scotia, or drive East to the Confederation Bridge.
We decided that we were satisfied with our photos on PEI, so we took the bridge. We made a beeline for Nova Scotia, but as soon as we crossed over, we realized that we'd never actually gotten to the bay of Fundy in our Maritime travels.
We started out near the Fossil Museum. They've got a nice stairway down to the beach. It was a bit after low tide, so the views might have been really nice... but a heavy fog was rolling in. I got a couple of decent shots, ad we moved on.
We headed down the "scenic" route, but it turns out that the definition of "scenic" did not actually include much in the way of views of the bay... fog or no fog.
I finally got annoyed with it and decided that one of the gravel roads we kept passing might lead to something interesting. We have five GPS devices in the car, two of which are navigational types (the others being loggers or transmitters), so you'd think we'd have no problems.
You would be wrong... My TomTom just refused to recognize any of the side roads. Really, this is kind of appropriate as the side roads that showed up on my traveling companion's Garmin were little more than logging cuts.
That didn't matter though - we headed down a fairly decent looking gravel road, and wound up at this totally nice little harbor area - Several beached boats made for some interesting photos.
We continued and the road got worse and worse, but we ran into "Spicer's Cove" which had some lovely views. The Garmin seemed sure that the road eventually met back up with the highway, so we continued.
Hoo boy, those roads really got bad. At one point, we were on something akin to an old pioneer wagon train track with tire ruts a good foot deep. We powered on slowly and very unsurely, and eventually got back to the highway.
Nobody will ever appreciate paved roads quite as much as we did for the next two hours as we headed toward our lodgings for the night in Dartmouth, NS.
